My Favourite Books~As of 2020

As many people know I love to read books, it doesn’t matter what book I will absolutely give it a try.

My favourite books consist of a variety of genres from action-packed adventures to some of the most critically acclaimed classics of all time. Some of these books are my favourite from my childhood that bring me nostalgia when I re-read them or some of my friends recommended me and I instantly fell in love. Regardless of where they originated these are my all-time favourites.

My first favourite is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It is about a teenager named Charlie as he enters his first year of high school and becomes friends with some seniors. Charlie also learns to deal with his past.

I remember receiving this book for Christmas in grade 7. I read it and became so involved with what Charlie was going through and found it well-written that I could understand what Charlie was dealing with.

My next favourite book is The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider. I actually got this book recommendation from some of the guys in my 8th grade class lol! They had been reading it and I decided to check it out. It’s about Ezra who recently got into a car accident which breaks his knee and can no longer play competitive tennis. In 12th grade he meets Cassidy then eventually they become girlfriend and boyfriend but holds a lot of secrets from everyone she meets.

I remember being so excited to read this because all of the guys in my class wouldn’t stop talking about it and how I felt like I was in an exclusive club. This is one of the few books I will go back and re-read if I want a quick book.

This next series brings me back to my childhood and they are Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. These books came from my older brother and he recommended them to me and I could not put it down. This series is based on Greek Mythology and the main character, Percy, is a demigod who battles monsters and villains. There are 5 books based on this series and Rick Riordan has written many other books similar to this mythology involving some of the same characters.

Reading these books were humorous and full of adventure. I felt as if I really was a part of Percy’s world. I still enjoy reading these presently if I need a light hearted read.

Next on my list is Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. This is surprisingly another book recommendation from one of my friend’s mom. She really enjoyed it so I decided to give it a try. Little Fires Everywhere is about a mother and daughter that move to Shaker Heights Ohio where they are renting a house that belongs to a picture perfect family except for Izzy. The mother named Mia soon decides to work for the family to observe what secrets her daughter may be hiding even though she has dark ones too that keep their relationship so close.

This book is definitely in my top favourites and will definitely keep you thinking about what’s going to happen next because it is definitely a suspenseful read.

Number five on my list is All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. This book has been made into a movie by Netflix and it does its justice to hit the key moments present in the novel. It is about a girl named Violet who recently lost her sister and Finch who is struggling to be alive. These 2 very different characters meet and find hope in each other.

I read this book before I even knew there was going to be a movie and when I did find out I thought man this will actually be worth watching. People do say that books are better than their movies and in this case, ya it was better but not by much. The movie did a great job of thoroughly describing events taking place in the book but something is always special about reading the book.

This next book many of you will know and if not you’ve definitely heard of the hit Netflix series and this one is 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. If you don’t know what 13 Reasons Why it’s about Hannah Baker who commits suicide and leaves 13 tapes in a shoe box and each tape mentions a person and they are one of the reasons why Hannah did what she did.

This book really stuck out to me because 1.) I finished it in less than 2 days from when I bought it because I was so intrigued by the storyline 2.) It talks about real life situations and issues that some people deal with from day to day.  The series does a great job of spreading awareness and has trigger warnings for a heads up that happen in certain episodes. Also 13 Reasons Why has their own website that allows you to talk to someone if you are dealing with something.

Next on my list the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard. PLL is about 5 friends that have a normal sleepover one night over Labour Day weekend but then one of their friend’s, Alison, goes missing. One year later they start getting threatening messages from an anonymous named A that only Ali knew.

These books are a very quick read however there are 16 books in the series but if you are a die-hard fan you’ll read them all. Lol. Also there is a television series on this series which is one of my favourite TV series too.

Last book on my list is The Knife of Never Letting Go book 1 of the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. This first book in the series is about a boy named Todd Hewit who lives in a world where everyone can hear each other’s thoughts. He has to embark on a journey because he has found a spot where no thoughts can be heard. This book is full of adventure and action with many thrilling passages that you will not want to put down this book!!

This book was incredible! I was so invested in this book that I could not stop thinking about it even after finishing it. There is also a movie coming out somewhat soon that I can not wait to see. This book I definitely recommend if you enjoy action and suspenseful adventures.
